A zsidóság megnyilvánulása szabadabb. A szertartások nem változtak, de többen vesznek részt rajta és főleg fiatalok.

How has the Coronavirus pandemic affected your practice of Judaism?

Egy ideig a péntek estéket sem tartottuk meg és mindenképpen kevesebbet járok templomba (zsinagógába). A nagy zsidó ünnepeket nagy közösségben tartottuk, a széder, sátoros ünnep, chanuka elmaradt.
During the coronavirus we didn’t celebrate Shabbat. I definitely frequent the synagogue less. We used to celebrate the biggest holidays in a large community but because of the coronavirus, the celebrations of Pesach, Shavuot, and Hanukkah were canceled.
Are you seeing signs that the Jewish population in Hungary is heading towards a more religious or more secular lifestyle?

Változik, egy re kevesebb olyan öreg van, vagy már alig, akik a háború előtt vallásosan nevelkedtek. De a fiatalok közül inkább visszafordultak a vallás felé.
The Jewish population is changing. There are fewer and fewer older members who were brought up religiously before the war [2nd world war]. A lot of members from the younger generation turn back to the religious customs.
Do Jewish families openly observe their holidays or is it more of a quiet practice? How are kids brought up to observe the holidays and other customs of Judaism?
A magyar zsido csaladok nyiltan unneplik a zsido unnepeket vagy inkabb csendben, csaladon belul? A gyerekek milyen zsido unnepek es szertartasok megtartasaval nonek fel?
A rendszerváltás előtthöz képest nyíltabban ünnepelünk. A gyerekek főleg az iskolákban és közösségekben ünneplik a chanukát, a pészachot, a sátoros ünnepet. A családokban kevés helyen tartják az ünnepeket, inkább közösségiek lettek.
Compared to the period before the change of regime, we can celebrate more openly. Jewish children mostly celebrate holidays such as Hanukkah, Pesach, and Shavuot at school and in the Jewish community. The traditions are celebrated mostly with the community instead of within the family.
To what extent do you see elements of antisemitism present in Hungary today? What signs of antisemitism are you seeing such as defamation of Jewish cemeteries, marches, attacks on the Jewish population?
Mennyire vannak jelen az antiszemitizmus elemei ma Magyarorszagon? Milyen megnyilvanulasait latod, peldaul a zsido temetok meggyalazasat, antiszemita felvonulasokat, vagy zsidok elleni utcai tamadasokat?
Nem érzem az antiszemitizmust és én nem is találkozom vele. Pedig én egy közismert zsidó vagyok. Ha van és úgy gondolom van, a társadalom csendesen antiszemita.
I don’t see and feel any antisemitism today, although I am a very well known member of the Jewish community. If there is antisemitism, and I believe it exists, it is mostly covert.

At the moment, I do not think that the government promotes antisemitism.

Today, Jews are not persecuted as they were during facism and also they are not silenced as they were during communism.
